Connecting the iPort dock to amplifiers

The Sonance iPort has two settings; the first allows it to be used as a source (fixed line level) input to a multiroom audio system, or the Keene in-wall stereo amplifier for a single room solution. The second setting allows a variable line level output as a source into a local power amp, the iPort is connected to an optional stereo line level volume control, eg QED WM21. For details of these installation and the wiring schematics, please refer to the PDF of the installation manual, which you can download from the bottom of this page, or call us for more information.

iPort variations

There are five versions of the in-wall iPort:

  • IW1 - Charges iPod when docked. Unbalanced audio and video outptu via RJ45 connectors, when docked. Unbalanced audio output wall plate included. Unbalanced video wall plate kit optional. Power supply inlcuded.
  • IW2 - As above with the addition of a built-in IR receiver. Remote control not included.
  • IW3 - As for IW2 with the addition of balanced audio. This allows the iPort to be located up to 150m away from the audio output wall plate.
  • IW4 - As for IW3 with the addition of a factory pre-mounted RS232 module for two way communication. This also allows display of the metadata on the control device, eg playlists track, artist, etc
  • IW5 - As for IW4 with the addition of a pre-loaded balanced video. Video video wall plate included. This allows the iPort to be up to 75m from the video display.

How does it work when other wireless audio systems have problems?

The Challenge
The 2.4GHz ISM band is a worldwide license-free band, which allows any application running on it to operate anywhere in the world, with no location specific modifications required. Wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless LAN as well as interferers such as microwave ovens and cordless telephones provide a challenging environment to work in. Any wireless radio solution that intends to provide a stable and robust RF link must overcome this challenge.

The Solution: Soundcast G2
Spread Spectrum technology is the most effective method of achieving effective communication in the challenging 2.4GHz ISM band. There are two principle ways this can be done: Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS)—such as used by Bluetooth, and Direct Sequencing Spread Spectrum (DSSS)—such as used by 802.11b. Soundcast G2 transceivers use FHSS. Our modules co-exist with all 2.4 GHz devices, and, just as important, co-exist with additional Soundcast G2 systems. This allows as many as three Soundcast G2 systems to operate in close proximity to each other. By achieving this level of service, wireless audio can now be securely used in high density multi-unit dwellings.

The Soundcast G2 platform uses advanced error protection techniques to guarantee the quality of service required in streaming audio applications. Hardware forward error correction, adaptive frequency hopping, and dynamic hopping channel diversity are all built into the protocol of the system. The system also supports bi-directional communication for acknowledging and retransmission should packet loss occur.

A remote handset is part of the Escient FP-1 kit, which lets you control the device from across the room, via a stand alone IR relay system
Alternatively you can have command of your iPod via our learning remote controls, including the Philips Pronto or from your PC via the RS232 connection.

When used with the Russound CAV system, which distributes composite video to all screens around your house, the Escient FP-1 allows you to display the metadata menu structure from the iPod, listen to your music through full size speakers and watch videos and view photo albums on your screen of choice. If you use the FP-1 with a multiroom controller without video distribution, you will need a video modulator such as the Labgear MOD111 and a TV distribution amplifier to make the iPod menus and video output available on TVs throughout the house.
